I am very privileged to be at St. John's school in your Grade 8 classroom. I will be with you through the Sacrament of Confirmation and lead you through lessons in media, history, religion and a whole unit in language arts on poetry and the fun we can have with words. This blog will act as another communication tool between you the students and me your teacher. It will allow you to review lessons, complete assignments, find additional resources and catch up on the events taking place in the school. Seven Chinese Brothers - Individual Talents
The story is about a family of seven identical brothers, all with unique and amazing abilities; incredible strength, hearing, seeing, resistance to heat, growing ability and one can cry tears larger then rivers. One day a brother is captured by two army’s of the Emperor and every method of execution attempted by the Emperor fails because another brother uses their specific incredible ability to survive the form of execution the Emperor was using. In the end the brothers can not figure out how to save the last brother and so they agree to all go to the Emperor and at least can be together. In the end the brother cries and washes away the Emperor and all is safe again.
This story is entertaining on the surface but contains a deeper meaning and a life lesson or moral that every student and person should recognize. Every person in the world has their own unique ability and talents but it is only when we use them together can we accomplish greatness.
This is a lesson, especially with your classmates, you can learn and model your learning around. Your task is to get into a circle, write your name in the middle of a piece of paper and what you believe to be your most valued talent, now pass your paper to your right, when you receive your neighbours paper write what you believe to be their most valuable talent, continue this until your paper gets back to you and then you can see the great many talent that you possess!

The Life of a Wizard By: Miss Weiss
There once was a good wizard named Harry
Who was attacked by Dementors, scary!His enemy Voldemort
His best friend Ron helped him thwart
And now Hogwarts is happy and merry!!
Then to school at Hogwarts he went
Where his happiest days were spent
Different spells were learnt
And potions were burnt
And he found out what friendship meant
A limerick is often humorous or nonsensical, but they can also be serious. They are most often written about a person or character. The purpose is to tell a short story. The characteristics of a limerick are as follows:
- must have 5 lines
- has an AABBA rhyming pattern (the A's rhyme and the B's rhyme)
- has an AABBA syllable pattern
- the B lines contain less syllables then A lines
Assignment: Take the Disney card given out in class and write your own 2 verse limerick about that character. Be sure to follow all the rules of a limerick. Be creative and have fun!!
Boy's Senior Volleyball Team
Congratulations!!!!!
Yesterday the boys played in their last tournament of the season at Assumption Highschool. In pool play the boys placed third and had an uphill battle to the top. They won their semi-final game against a strong opponent with solid spikes by Arivin and the remarkable net play of Zaid. Despite their amazing comeback in the second set of the Championship match due to David's killer serve the team came up just shy of first place but attained the silver. All the boys can be proud of their accomplishments this season and I was proud of the development, dedication, and school spirit shown by all members of the team. A special mention goes to Nestor who received the team's MVP honours. Thank you to all the boys who made this coaching experience one I will never forget!

Graphic Novels tell a story through both pictures and words, for an assignment the students must pick a significant figure in history and use the principles of a graphic novel to tell the story of their lives. The graphic novels will be presented to the class in order to allow all students to attain the information researched by their peers.

"The goal of Daily Physical Activity (DPA) is to enable all elementary students to improve or maintain their physical fitness and their overall health and wellness and to enhance their learning opportunities".Ontario Ministry of EducationPolicy/Program Memorandum No. 138: DPA in Elementary Schools 1-8
Overall, Daily Physical Activity in your school must:
- Include all students from grades 1 - 8.
- Occur during instructional time every school day in a variety of locations such as:
Outdoors.
In your school gymnasium.
In multipurpose rooms.
In your classroom. - Involve at least 20 minutes of continuous moderate to vigorous physical activity every school day.
- Include a warm-up and cool-down period.
- Be planned and modified to ensure that students with special needs can participate.
- Follow safety guidelines as outlined in the DPA Ministry Resource Guidelines
- Represent just one of many components of health and physical education at your school. DPA does NOT replace your school's health and physical education curriculum.
- DPA is also required to be sustained, every student must be working at a moderate or vigorous effort level the whole time.
Participating in sports and doing daily physical activity is an important part of growing up healthy and doing well in school. Research shows that students who engage in daily physical activity demonstrate improved academic performance. Our schools need to be in the business of helping students reach their full intellectual, emotional and physical potential. With the Ministry of Educations overall Healthy Schools Program the children will be allowed to achieve a healthy lifestyle and will in turn be able to be more focused and productive during class and achieve their academic goals.

Sum of you may have never heard of these forms before butt buy the end of this class you all will bee experts in the field of poetry and can transfer the righting skills learned in poetry to you're everyday writing and recognize them in the stories that you read.
Some of you may have noticed the many errors in word use in the above paragraph this is because before we start looking at poetry it is useful to know that words that are similar can have different meanings; these words are called homonyms.
